The Decision: To Mortgage or Not to Mortgage?

0

To mortgage.

It was simple.    Zach, “Let’s buy a house.”  Nikki, “Okay.”  Short Pause.  Nikki, “I’ll call a lender tomorrow and see how much we qualify for.”  Zach, “Okay.”

Okay, okay.  We put a little more thought into our decision than that, but once we did the math it was a no-brainer.  We spent ten months searching for the perfect car.  Our research and leg work really paid off and we bought Xavier in July.   Once the search was over I did not know what to do with the time that I used to spend searching for cars so I began searching for homes.  I figured it wasn’t likely that we would be in a position to purchase a home for a couple of years.  But it was fun to look.  What I didn’t know was that my new past-time would soon turn into something much more serious.

My brother-in-law, Andrew, put an offer on a house in Annapolis and Zach’s interest was piqued.   On Wednesday, October 13th,  Zach came home from work and it was obvious that he had something on his mind.  I knew he was thinking about the possibility of buying a house but he wasn’t yet ready to approach me with the idea.  I tried to be patient as he gave his plan more thought.  The next day I finally asked him to share his thoughts and the quotes above are taken from the conversation that followed between us.

Zach divuldged that he was thinking about the possibility of purchasing a house, living in the basement, and renting out the top floors.  Andrew’s plan became Zach’s inspiration.  I completely agreed with his reasoning and we jumped right into the search for our first home.
